Cloud architect, Tech lead, DevOps engineer

I design the platforms large organisations depend on, lead the teams that build them, and automate how they ship.

Independent and based in the Netherlands. Mostly Google Cloud, where I hold five certifications, and Azure.

What I do

Cloud architect
Landing zones, integration and data platforms on Google Cloud and Azure, designed for the many teams and applications that will depend on them.
Tech lead
A clear direction, decisions written down, and coaching for the people who build it, so they can decide without waiting for me.
DevOps engineer
Hands on the Terraform, the pipelines and the code. An architecture nobody can build is just a drawing.

Selected work

3,000+applications depend on it

Air France-KLM — Technical architect

For the middleware team of about 150 people, I architected solutions that more than 3,000 applications depend on. I also delivered six enterprise Terraform modules used across 1,000+ applications and integrations.

−70%team cloud costs, so far

NPO — Google Cloud consultant

In a data engineering team handling 5K–50K events a second, I helped cut the team’s cloud costs by 70% so far, and stabilised a pipeline that had weekly outages, partly by turning it from stateful into stateless.

DICTU — Solution architect

At RDI, part of the Dutch government, preparing applications for modernisation across Azure, on-premise and GovCloud, starting with a fit-gap analysis of dozens of applications against Dutch law, regulations and standards such as BIO and DigiD.

23microservices, one shared database

FedEx — Solution architect

For a quote platform responsible for hundreds of millions in revenue a year, I designed its move to Azure Kubernetes Service, worked on it hands-on and guided its team of about 30 developers through it. I also architected splitting the database its 23 microservices shared, partly completed during the engagement.

~5 TBraw user events a day

Bol.com — Software and data engineer

Part of the team turning raw events from millions of users into search journeys, KPIs and recommendations. I introduced the team to mutation analysis to measure test quality, and mentored engineers.

2 monthsto live, under PCI-DSS

ReBound — Senior software engineer

For a critical payment service, I helped bring integrations with all major Dutch payment providers live.

Before that.Skyworkz, cloud consultant across architecture, data engineering and DevOps, and organiser of internal learning; 4PS, cloud architect, responsible for the technology vision and cloud adoption strategy; Trippix, founder of a side venture, an AI travel planner on Gemini, Cloud Run, Firestore and BigQuery.

How I work

The work I like best starts with a tangled system: a database shared by 23 services, a pipeline that falls over every week, a cloud bill far higher than it needs to be. I help take it apart until the better design is obvious, and I can usually show why the old one was worse.

I set a clear direction and give teams the scaffolding to run with it: C4 diagrams, runbooks, a lot of conversations and written-down decisions. At Air France-KLM I reintroduced Architecture Decision Records to the middleware team. The people building it can then decide without waiting for me.

And I stay hands-on. Fourteen years in, I still write the code, the Terraform and the pipelines.

Talks & code

Identifying bad design, objectively — JFall talk

At JFall, the Dutch Java conference: how to spot bad software design with static analysis instead of opinion.

Elepy — Open source

A Java framework for CMS-style web applications with a pluggable, hexagonal architecture. 100+ stars on GitHub.

Archstats — Open source

A CLI tool and service, in Go and Vue, that generates insights about a codebase’s architecture.

Documents

I keep a CV for each kind of assignment rather than one long one. Tell me what you’re hiring for and I’ll send you a link to the one that fits.

Ask for a CV

Tell me about the platform you’re building.

A few lines on the problem, the team and the timeline are enough to start the conversation.
